From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Theatre (or theater, see spelling differences) is a branch of the performing arts. While any performance may be considered theatre, as a performing art, it focuses almost exclusively on live performers creating a self contained drama. A performance qualifies as dramatic by creating a representational illusion. By this broad definition, theatre had existed since the dawn of man, as a result of the human tendency for storytelling. Since its inception, theatre has come to take on many forms, utilizing speech, gesture, music, dance, and spectacle, combining the other performing arts, often as well as the visual arts, into a single artistic form. The word derives from the Ancient Greek theatron (θέατρον) meaning "the seeing place." From Wikipedia under the

Asked by Bob B - Wed Nov 14 12:15:33 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's no way to answer this question. You need to provide more info than "comedy" and "wizard". The ideal music would be music that enhances the action of the scene, the ideal props would utterly suit the action of the scene, and the wizard costume should look great on the actor and with the set. But since you haven't told us any specifics, I can't be more specific than that. Answered by helene - Wed Nov 14 12:35:59 2007 What are good musical theatre audition songs for female character actors? Q. I'm a female character actor (able to play characters aged between 12 - 23) gathering songs for my standard ballad/up-tempo and contemporary ballad/up-tempo musical theatre audition pieces. The more obscure the musical, the better. An example of what a character actor would sing is a song like "I Can't Say No" from Oklahoma! Asked by MissArtiste - Wed Aug 12 20:22:57 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. You might try something from Urinetown (such as Privilege to Pee), maybe Hairspray, the ballad 'There's a Fine, Fine Line' from Avenue Q, 'The Soloman Song' (or others) from Threepenny Opera, or 'You Can Always Count on Me' from City of Angels. Something I sometimes do is check out the Internet Broadway Database, looking up the show I'm auditioning for (or previous roles I've played) and see what else that actor appeared in. That generally points me in a good direction. Answered by jacindabox05 - Wed Aug 12 21:39:45 2009 What colleges have the best programs to get a BFA in Musical Theatre?
Q. I'm looking into colleges presently. I want to major in Musical Theatre, preferably with a BFA. Not just Drama or Dance or Voice, but specifically Musical Theatre. What colleges have good Musical Theatre Programs? And does anyone know about the quality of the UArts in Philadelphia Musical Theatre program? Asked by Chelsea K - Fri Dec 29 19:53:03 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Two in my region are Oklahoma City University, and the University of Oklahoma. I understand that Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh has a nice program. It is not all that common a major, actually. Be careful of places that say they have a "Musical Theatre" major that is actually just a degree in music or theatre with some courses in the other. Musical theatre is a highly specialized art form, and requires special training. There is no technical distinction between the meanings of the two spellings, however most theatre artists prefer the English spelling because it creates a historical nod to the ancient Greek term theatron. Some also use the American spelling to designate a theatre building and the English term to reference the art itself, as in the "art of theatre." Theatre is that branch of the performing arts concerned with the creation of stories or narratives for (or with) an audience using combinations of acting, speech, gesture, music, dance, object manipulation, sound and spectacle — indeed, any one or more elements of the other performing arts. In addition to standard narrative dialogue style, theatre takes such forms as opera, musicals, ballet, mime, kabuki, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera, mummers' plays, and pantomime.
